New York Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2010

I now have enough time to write posts based on my favourite collections from the Autumn and Winter 2010 collections which is something I've been really excited about and am so glad I finally have the opportunity to do it, I thought I would cover the New York collections first and do each fashion week in a different post otherwise it would be too long of a post. For me Autumn/Winter shows are always the best out of the two seasons. Im not saying I don’t like Summer and Spring clothing or trends but for some reason it seems people make less of an effort and style becomes more relaxed, I find it a bit too soft and romantic most of the time. Not that its such an awful thing but I don’t get as excited or the same thrill like when the Autumn and Winter collections are shown and hit the high street. The clothes are always more dramatic and you can get away with dressing up/layering up more (I think its like a pick me up for ourselves when the weather is so awful and cold.) The pictures which I have used are the ones which are my favourites from the collections.

3.1 Phillip Lim:

I thought Phillip Lim’s show started off with a seventies boho luxe kind of feel, still sophisticated and clean cut with a soft colour palette of beige, grey, white and black. The clothing then progressed into outfits which were inspired by punk/disco which was the theme, a bit more colour and glitz was injected into the collection with the use of purple and silver sequined tops, a burnished gold suit and gold embellishment on certain outfits.

Alexandre Herchcovitch

I love Alexandre Herchcovitch’s use of contrasting materials and embellishment. I thought that the collections underlying theme was quite grungy but you can see a lot of different cultural references throughout the collection . Ripped and slashed dresses and tops, and roughly cut mesh tops. The use of print was interesting (I thought it was a bold move to use such vibrant and busy patterns on jackets) and the clashing of prints worked well, the prints and headwear made me think of a tribal warrior or a gypsy princess. The collection had the right balance of being edgy without having to lose femininity. I have to say the last few looks look more like something Anna Sui would design, but overall a really interesting collection.

Altuzarra

A collection mainly made up of leather screamed sex. The clothes looked like they’ve been painted onto the body. Jackets and skirt suits were tailored and nipped in at the waist which are to die for, especially the coats with the Goat hair collars. There were actual Catwoman bodysuits, dresses were slashed and held together with leather laces. The collection was very glam S&M gear. The collection was mainly black bar two nude coloured dresses and a finale in red, I love how sexy, dark and dramatic the collection is.

Anna Sui

Boho as always was Anna Sui’s Autumn and Winter collection, a mixture of patterns from paisleys to houndstooth. I loved the mixture of fabrics used from tweeds to checks and sequined fabrics. The fur armwarmers were strange but went down quite well for me. The show closed with flapper like dresses. Overall the collection was really dreamy and feminine, Anna Sui is probably one of the only designers who could get away with being so feminine and cutesy, so over the top she uses so many ideas in one outfit and somehow she manages to make it work.

Cynthia Rowley

A collection where feminine silhouettes have been given a make over where its more fun and edgy with layers of fringing or feathers emerging from parts of skirts, dresses, trousers tops and jackets in an array of bright colours. I thought it was an interesting concept to have padded printed dresses and gloves they worked really well. The hooded padded jacket seem to have what looks like a Japanese pattern on it, that and the yellow lace dress with the fringing were the stand out pieces in my opinion.

Proenza schouler

Proenza Schouler swapped in surf wear for underwear as outerwear a trend which is still going strong, There were leather bustiers, mesh shirts and thigh high stockings. Print was still a main focus this season with them. Also there were graffiti styled trousers and printed dresses inspired by artist Christopher Wool. This collection had a formal almost corperate wear feel to it that got sexed up.
